Ayurveda
is a holistic system of healing. Ayurvedic healers
use a multitiude of healing therapies to maintain
the health of the well person and to restore balance
to those that are unwell. Diet and nutrition, internal
cleansing, massage and steam therapy, yoga and exercise,
aromatherapy, herbs, meditation and color and gem
therapies are all used to restore balance.
The
ayurvedic approach to health places enormous importance
on prevention. Toxins in the physiology are considered
the root cause of disorders, and therapies have
been developed to efficiently cleanse the system
of impurities. Panchakarma, literally "five
actions," is a rigorous process of deep-cleansing
the physiology and is generally supervised by an
ayurvedic physician. However, ayurvedic healers
encourage ongoing internal cleansing, through the
use of such modalities as cleansing herbs and the
ayurvedic warm oil self-massage.
Diet
is extremely important, as is proper digestion.
Ama, digestive toxins left behind from incomplete
digestion, can breed disease if not cleansed. And
for the mind, body and emotions to be balanced,
a healthy wholesome diet and proper assimilation
of nutrients by the cells and tissues is vital.
